Back in February of this year, when CaFA first started reaching out to filmmakers to obtain films for our screenings, we met Wayne Benjamin of Fabrikated Projex. Wayne sent us his demo for The Croft, in response to our call for films on Mandy. Over the next few weeks, we had several conversations with Wayne, having no idea at the time, that seven months later, we would be here, in Jamaica, shooting The Croft, as a feature length film.
Shooting the film was an amazing experience. We arrived in Jamaica on Aug 30 and began shooting the next day. It took us 5 days to shoot the entire film. From the first day of shooting to the last, we were up and out early in the morning, closing the set down after 10 pm, most nights. With us being NY and Wayne being in Jamaica, pre-production was far from smooth. There were many missed emails, planning sessions and cast changes, but with a lot of effort and a little bit of luck, we were able to pull it off. It was a great team effort.
Until the shoot, I had no idea how important getting the lighting right in a film was, nor how heavy even the smallest light can feel after 2 mins of holding it up. Needless to say, it was a great experience, and one we hope to repeat many times over, as we work on creating Caribbean content we all can be proud of.
A big part of the reason we were able to make this film, was the contribution from our supporters, during our Indiegogo campaign. We didn’t meet our goal, but what we raised went a long, long way, in making it possible for us to get this done. So, we would like to take another opportunity to thank them. Thank you, Brooke Tucker, Ronelle F. Lucas, Rex Lucas, Roslin Khan, Douglas Moore, Jahi Hamilton, Garry Hamilton, Elise McMillan, Ultimo Benjamin, Marie Thompson, Everlyn Palmer, Burt Khouri, Marketa Zelena, Paula Cholmondeley, Romona Baxter and Vince. We would also like to thank Helen and Dave Myrie for hosting us during the shoot and putting up with our late, late nights and Brave, for picking us up early in the mornings and dropping us off in the wee hours, before heading home himself.
